Gateway to Appalachia

Carolina Western is situated in the mountainous northwestern corner of South Carolina, where the Appalachian mountains begin their northern expanse of several hundred miles.

Some of the world's finest hardwood and white pine timber is grown in the Western Carolina mountains, location of the highest mountain elevations in Eastern U.S.A. Because of this abundant supply of Appalachian timber, the nation's manufacturers of hardwood and white pine furniture are concentrated in the Carolinas.

Appalachian and northern timber grows more slowly due to the colder climate and usually has close annual growth rings, which means the lumber is finer textured. Leading manufacturers worldwide come to the Carolinas for the very best in hardwood and pine raw materials.

Concentration

Mountain grown red oak, white oak, white ash, tulip poplar, walnut and white pine lumber is brought in to the yard from the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountain regions, carefully inspected, put on dry sticks, stored and air dried under sheds for later kiln drying.

Hard maple, soft maple, northern red oak, cherry, birch and other species are brought from northern states, in order to offer the very best selection available. Specialty dimension stock in species such as hickory, dogwood (cornel wood), persimmon, and Lignoferro® densified wood is supplied for pattern stock and various industrial applications.

Methods and Equipment

Quality products must be backed by excellence in service and workmanship. At Carolina Western we take pride in the care with which our products are treated and handled.

Our facilities include sheds for air-drying lumber to prevent checks and discoloration due to exposure to sun and weather. In this way we optimize the natural beauty of the wood grain for a brighter, better color. Other available facilities include equipment for kiln-drying, stacking and grading, and for the packing of lumber in sea-going containers used both for our own exports and for other exporters. We have easy access to many eastern seaports, especially to the conveniently located ports of Charleston and Savannah for overseas shipping.
